THE LOST GERSHWIN

Young swing starlet and string quartet tackle the lost songs of George and Ira Gershwin

When 19 year old Victoria Hart, toast of the tabloids, added some undiscovered gems from the Gershwin brothers to her musical menu, the result was this fascinating release.

But there's another twist. The search for The Lost Gershwin began when Kerenza Peacock inherited a suitcase full of 60 year old sheet music imported into Britain by American servicemen during World War II. Much of it was by George and Ira Gershwin, a major songwriting force in musical theatre between the wars, with two dozen Broadway and Hollywood scores to their credit. Kerenza, leader of all-female string quartet Pavao, met singer Victoria thanks to the wonders of myspace and they travelled to the US Library of Congress to make further finds.

Russell Watson bestows his seal of approval by duetting with Victoria on Isn't It A Pity from 1933's Pardon My English - but choices like Ask Me Again and Tonight's The Night have remained unheard by all but scholars of the Great American Songbook. The performances and arrangements are very much true to the era; only the recording fidelity is 21st century.

Kerenza's Pavao quartet add the strings with aplomb, the gypsy stylings of Little Jazz Bird being particularly impressive. And if you aren't impressed by the rhyme for Vodka in the song of that name - "Vodka makes me feel oddka" - then blame Oscar Hammerstein and Otto Harbach. It must have been lyricist Ira's day off!

review by Michael D Heatley, HMV Choice Magazine

Accompanying Boyle are three singers who take on all the other roles in Newley's life. Kate Eason, Victoria Hart and Anita Markham assist as mothers, lovers and wives, as well as dogs, agents and daughters - the show relies as much on their vigour and flexibility as on Boyle’s wit. Hart particularly stands out, Monroe-esque in beauty and bursting with musical talent, this singing waitress radiates energy on stage

review by Howard Loxton, The British Theatre Guide

Victoria Hart has been getting tips from the original forces' sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn.

The 19-year-old British swing singer - who was discovered by George Clooney - is going out to entertain British troops in Afghanistan and has been taking advice from the top.

Victoria revealed: "I met Vera Lynn at the Goodwood Revival. She was reminiscing about how much fun it was. I told her my boyfriend was in the army and he was in Afghanistan and he was saying I'm going to be singing in front of hundreds of horny men. She said 'Now you'll be surprised how well behaved they are' and I told her 'Yes, but that was in your day'.

She's really lovely. She's 91 and she's SO with it. She wished me luck and said they'd love me."

She added: "I was so honoured to be asked, it's such a privilege. I think it's quite quirky that I'm going out there because my music is quite reminiscent of WWII and I can be a real sweetheart!

I'm so going to get a little 1940s dress made in camouflage, I think it will be really cute."

The young Marilyn Monroe look-alike is also fronting a Give Blood campaign to help the injured armed forces.

She said: "My blood type is O negative, which is universal so everyone can use it. They are really in need of it because when it's a serious injury they don't have time to check the blood type, which has definitely egged me on to give blood regularly."

Victoria's new album ‘The Lost Gershwin’ is released on Monday October 27.

pa.press.net Friday 24th October 2008

Adrian Denning reviews Mood Swings

So many people are getting in on the swing thing, mostly with disastrous results. Look, Mr Sinatra, Sir to you, did it better than anybody else is ever going to. Got it? Good. As for Victoria Hart, at least she takes a slightly different approach. She covers the Hendrix number 'Little Wing' for instance, turning it into a very sexy sounding number as her voice gets your heart pumping and your, er, parts 'swaying'. I was less pleased to find a cover of a Robert Palmer tune, 'Addicted To Love', because I don't like Robert Palmer, dead or not. Is he dead? No matter. Victoria Hart thankfully improves on the original with a full sound, a less funky sound, but again her voice does it. An interesting, value for money twenty minute, six track EP release this. You may like it. This gets a 'three' for the music and a 'four' for the sexiness, but I don't do half stars, unfortunately. Check her out!
(reviewed 26.03.2008) *** out of *****

This album of lesser known Gershwin songs is beguiling enough and handled with a sassy stylishness by Hart, (forever to be known as “The Singing Waitress” ever since she performed for George Clooney at a Cannes Film Festival party). The string quartet Pavao brings a Broadway polish to such numbers as the perky Tonight's the Night and the Lady Be Good-like Little Jazz Bird, while Russell Watson gets all crooner-ish on the attractive duet Isn't it a Pity.

review by John Clarke, The Times

NEWLEY - THE FOOL WHO DARED TO DREAM

Exotic Fruit Productions in association with Wild Thyme Productions presents:
NEWLEY - THE FOOL WHO DARED TO DREAM
Created by David Boyle & Pete Gallagher

WORLD PREMIERE

Upstairs at the Gatehouse, Tuesday 18th - Sunday 30th November 2008

PRESS NIGHT: THURSDAY 20th NOVEMBER 2008

Anthony Newley formed one of the most successful song writing partnerships of a generation with Leslie Bricusse. This new musical encapsulates Newley’s formidable success, with songs from works such as Stop the World, I Want To Get Off! The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd and from the soundtracks of his classic films Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and Dr Dolittle. It also draws on the personal accounts of those who knew him and who have lent their support to this production: his writing partner Leslie Bricusse, co-star Anna Quayle, his agent Peter Charlesworth and his children Sacha and Tara.

After a successful run in Edinburgh 2007 with a show entitled Newley - The Singer & His Songs, David Boyle has teamed up with West End performer, writer and director Pete Gallagher to develop the show. Pete has just directed Fairy Lights, for which he is the winning director, for the second year running, of the Windsor Marriott New Writing Award. He is currently directing Missing Mel at the Cochrane Theatre London, following its five-star, critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2008. He is currently responsible for drama training on TV’s Gladiators, having caused an impact as resident drama coach on Any Dream Will Do and Strictly Come Dancing (where he turned around the fortunes of Gethin Jones, with perfect scores from 3 judges).

David Boyle stars as Anthony Newley. Boyle’s acting credits include ‘Billy’ in Little Voice for the Oxford Stage Company, and various leading roles for the International Film Institute. Most recently David performed as Newley at the Pigalle Club, London with Lenny Beige, and at the Pleasance Theatre in London and Edinburgh.

The cast includes Victoria Hart, the 19-year old best known as the ‘singing waitress’ after entertaining George Clooney and Brad Pitt on board a yacht at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. Her appearance in Newley: The Fool Who Dared To Dream, follows the recent release of her new album The Lost Gershwin based on the discovery of rare sheet music found in an attic.

Musical Director and Arranger Jan Winstone is a regular keyboard player in West End Shows, currently working on Billy Elliot, Wicked and Spamalot. She was Musical Director for Yikes! (Unicorn Theatre) and Assistant Musical Director for Coram Boy (National Theatre).

female first interview

Singer Victoria Hart shot to fame over night when she was invited to Cannes to sing for none other that George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Off the back of her performance, which took her away from her life as a singing waitress, she released her debut album Whatever Happened to Romance as well as being a hit at Glastonbury, despite the poor weather.

I caught up with her to discuss her whirlwind career, the new record and the future.

Did you always want to sing? And how did you get started?

I've always wanted to sing, for as long as I can remember. I was in classical singing training when I was tiny - eight or nine. I got entered into all these competitions and I came last in every single one. I kind of stopped then but all I wanted to do was sing.

Then I was singing throughout school, in all of the plays and concerts, and a piano teacher asked me to come and sing at this jazz concert when I was fifteen and there was a producer there and he was like 'you have really got something, I want you to come into my studio'.

He thought I was twenty or twenty two and I was this fifteen year old girl but that is where it all started. We started recording and getting everything together.

And you sang in Cannes

I did I guess you could say that was my big break.

How did all that come about?

I moved to London when I was sixteen, to go to a music college and start following my career seriously, and I began working in a restaurant as a singing waitress. I needed to earn a bit or extra money so I thought I might as well do it using my talents.

I was there for about a year and then I finished the course then this guy came in and he was like 'I really want you to sing for a party' and I was like ok, thinking it was a wedding or something. The next thing I know I got a phone call saying ok in two weeks you are going to sing for George Clooney and Brad Pitt in Cannes and I was like “you’re kidding me”.

And what was the experience like?

It was incredible. But when I found out I didn't want to get my hopes up. I thought it would be a cool experience but I kind of thought “they won't even be there”. I grew up in Cannes and I have been crashing Paris Hilton's since I was fourteen and they come in for five minutes, the celebrities, and then they go to do their own thing.

But they were all at this party and it was incredible it was so weird, because at the beginning you were kind of watching then and they didn't look real - they looked like moving Madame Tussauds models.

It was such a whirlwind and afterwards I can't believe it exploded like it did, we had to change our flights for the next because we had to do all the TV stuff out there. I had no experience with any of this stuff and I was just so overwhelmed, this giggly little girl. It was so funny.

Tell me about your mini album “Mood Swings”

The first album that was out, What Happened to Romance, was all original stuff, we had it recorded since I was sixteen. The lead song on the mini album is 'Some Day', which is my favourite song from the last album. We just changed the backing track and funked it up a bit. The rest of the material is favourite songs from all the gigs I have been doing. We went to just get them recorded because we thought that they would just be nice to have and we were listening to them back and we were like 'oh they are pretty good, might as well release it'.

And how do you go about choosing these songs, I presume that you have got quite a few favourites?

Oh god yeah. It was kind of what we got from feedback, what people said they liked the most. I go through phases with songs, I pick one and it's my favourite for a month and then I'm like “no, I can't listen to it any more”. That's what's so funny about doing your original stuff on gigs. When you are listening to it it's like “oh I've heard this song fifty million times, you can turn it off now” but with gigs I never get bored of it. I love being on stage so much.

How would you describe your sound?

I would say it's kind of swing, I wouldn't call it jazz so much now, swing pop, that's what I call it, with lots of influences from everywhere. I'm just mucking around with it, which is quite fun.

You have shot to fame quite quickly - how are you finding all the attention?

I love it! (laughs) I have always been like that. I'm the biggest attention seeker you'll ever know. It's so much fun. I haven't had any problems yet - you get some weird people but I don't mind it's quite funny.

It's really surreal, I had been back a week from Cannes and I already had three fan sites on the Internet it was like “hang on, this isn't real”. I had to keep pinching myself.

Your debut album “Whatever Happened to Romance?” did really well - how did you find the recording process?

It was really fun we did it all kind of live so we just went in the studio for four months one summer. It was really fun! Being in the studio is such a creative thing, and we go up to the studio in Gloucestershire amongst the horses and cows, and it's really chilled out and you get the creative juices flowing. I really enjoy it.

We are already writing the fourth album, how scary is that? My third album “The Lost Gershwin” is coming out first – we haven’t written the music for that so it's really nice to be creating something new.

I was just about to ask about the Gershwin record - can you tell me a bit about that and why Gershwin?

I love him! My first jazz ballad that I ever learnt was Summertime I think when I was six I heard the person before me singing it and that is when I first started knowing that I loved that jazz old school music. There is a little story behind the Gershwin thing because I'm doing it with my string quartet, Pavao, but that's a secret so I'm not allowed to tell you about that – other than to say it's all very exciting.

Apart from these new albums what is next for you say for the next twelve months?

We are really busy with the music side of things, which I'm really happy about, because in the beginning after I got back from Cannes we almost forgot about the music because I was doing so many photo shoots. So we have the Gershwin record coming out and we are doing lots of cool gigs for that because it's just voice and strings, so it's really quirky. Hopefully we will get lots of posh places to play at for when the Queen has her tea.

I'm doing loads of festivals this year, mainly jazz festivals, they are my favourite gigs to do because it's people who really want to watch music and so hey listen to everything you say and do and you really pick up great fans at festivals. So I'm excited for the summer.

How did you find playing at Glastonbury?

It was incredible, I was a bit nervous because I thought this isn’t my type of music, but I had the best time ever and played to the best crowd, I still reply to people on MySpace. It was really muddy which was so funny - there was like a metre of mud and I had these Marc Jacobs heels and this new dress all planned out and when I got there I went “no way!” and I performed in my pyjamas with a jumper over the top. No way am I getting my Marc Jacobs shoes muddy!

What have you found to be the benefits of MySpace?

I have made actual proper fans that I feel really connected to. You look at other people's Myspace, other bands, and it's just people saying 'I really love the music' and that's it. Whereas I want to make a relationship with them, that is the way that you get a fan for life. Sometimes if you talk to them it does get a bit weird you get some people giving me their numbers and saying “come out with me” and it's like “no, why would I do that?”

NEW ALBUM 'The Lost Gershwin'

It’s 1942, America has entered the Second World War and Britain is full of GIs and American airmen.

The American Air Force personnel are restless and miss their homes and their music. At one such air base at Mildenhall in Suffolk, a young British female pianist called Eve Stannard entertains the troops with her piano renditions of famous standards.

Eve has a problem – the British have stopped printing sheet music because of the war effort so she has no music to enable her to play the latest standards. So Eve asks the young airmen returning to the States to ask their buddies to bring back as much sheet music as they can find from America. Over the months she builds up a huge collection of music.

The war is won, the piano lid is shut, the music is put away into a very large suitcases…..

Fast forward 53 years. It’s 1997 and Fay Peacock, whose daughter Kerenza is studying violin at the Royal Academy, is in a hospital bed waiting for an operation. In the bed next to her is…. Eve Stannard. The two get talking, realise their mutual interest in music and discuss Kerenza’s love of show tunes. However when Fay returns from her operation Eve is no longer there.

Some weeks later, a knock on the door at the Peacock home and standing outside are the suitcases full of musical treasures that Eve Stannard amassed during the war. She has gifted it to Kerenza who, busy with her studies, puts it away in an attic for several more years.

Fast forward again to 2007, when Kerenza, whose string quartet Pavao has now gained international recognition, is having a conversation with Victoria Hart and her record producer Geoff Gurd about standard catalogue and the Great American songbook. Victoria and Pavao have met through myspace, have done some concerts together and are now thinking of recording together.

On recounting the tale of Eve Stannard, Victoria and Geoff ask to take a look inside the suitcase and to their astonishment they discover several thousand pieces of sheet music. Among the collection is hundreds of unknown/little known songs by famous American composers like George Gershwin.

The team contacts Leopold Godowsky III, one of the sole surviving relatives of the Gershwin family, and are invited to visit the American Library of Congress in Washington DC to unearth some more original Gershwin manuscripts. Proper Records become interested in the story and the decision is made to record “The Lost Gershwin”.

The result is a unique take on songs from one of the 20th century’s greatest composers. Instead of opting for the usual big band style, the producers have gone for a more subtle and varied approach, relying on intricate arrangements and skilful playing by the quartet and their fellow musicians.

Some of the arrangements echo the jazz tinged melodic style of the composer, whilst others see Victoria Hart stray into hitherto unfamiliar territory – musicals, country music, even Vaudeville.

Gershwin lovers may well enjoy listening to the rarities on this album, most of which haven’t been recorded for a long time, if ever. At the same time Victoria and Pavao hopie to reach a whole new band of admirers who, like them, will come to appreciate the beauty and sophistication of George’s melodies.

The Lost Gershwin is available on 27th October in shops
throughout the UK (HMV, WH Smith, etc) and on-line
(www.amazon.co.uk, etc) and worldwide on iTunes....

I just wanted to say how excited I am to have seen Victoria in the flesh last night at the Russell Watson concert. She is so friendly and so obliging with autographs and pictures, she was really the icing on the cake at the concert. I hope to see more of her in the coming years and I am sure she is going to be a massive star.

John Gambrill, Peterborough

Bristol Evening Post review

After what has been a traumatic time for Russell Watson, he is now back on the road with a nationwide 16-date tour.

His many loyal fans turned out in force last night and were rewarded with a thrilling performance.

Nineteen-year-old Victoria Hart impressed with her rendition of Taking A Chance On Love.

On Russell’s return, he sang successfully two Frank Sinatra classics, in the inimitable style of the famous crooner. The much slower Louisiana followed before the first part ended with a superb presentation of Music Of The Night.

Barcelona was a lively introduction to the second half before the Dean Martin standard Volare, where the singer walked amongst the audience, rather embarrassingly receiving kisses and hugs from middle-aged ladies.

After the sprightly Funiculi Funicula, Victoria returned to present the Marilyn Monroe classic My Heart Belongs To Daddy.

Russell and Victoria’s duet, The Prayer, was impressive, while, after a couple more numbers, Russell came to the inevitable part of present-day tenors’ repertoire, Nessun Dorma. This was one of the best I have heard – straightforward and powerful, with some mesmerising top notes.

John Packwood

WHTR album review

Today’s celebrity-obsessed world has seen the rapid rise of reality TV, and the attendant burst of homogenous, bland and short-lived manufactured artists. In such an environment, it can be difficult for niche music to prosper; would Kate Bush’s fantastical songs have impressed the judges? Would Regina Spektor’s subversive experimentalism endear her to an audience brought up with the Spice Girls and R’n'B? Perhaps not. It’s always gratifying, then, when a new singer appears who is determined to change it all, and who has the star quality to succeed. Step forward Miss Victoria Hart, former Richmond waitress turned jazz-singing sensation. A trilingual 19-year old who counts Amy Winehouse among her friends and George Clooney among her fans, Hart claims that her album represents a return to the unabashedly romantic music of the past. Comprising 13 songs and a remix of the title track, it has been designed to showcase Hart’s voice with a variety of different styles; it is in this that the album draws its strength and also, sadly, finds its weakness.

Hart’s musical heroines include such luminaries as Ella Fitzgerald and Eva Cassidy, and her love of old-fashioned big band music shines through in some of the album’s best tracks. ‘Two Time Blues’ would suit Fitzgerald perfectly with its classy and deeply sensual style, Hart’s youthful voice perfectly capturing the naiveté of the song’s heroine. The more glamorous ‘Chocolates & Strawberries’ shows off a highly developed sense of fun and wickedness, with some plainly suggestive lyrics set against a snazzy ‘70s-style backing rich with wah-wah trumpets and a thumping bass line. Hart’s ability to draw a picture with her voice is quite remarkable, and is suitably demonstrated by perhaps the best song on the album - also its only cover - ‘Sunny Afternoon’. Toe tapping and deeply sultry, Hart’s interpretation of the classic Kinks song evokes all the attendant vivid images of a languid, sun-drenched summer, managing to ensure that the song remains familiar while throwing in some throaty sax riffs to suit her jazz credentials. Other impressive tracks include the 1950s-style two-step jazz of ‘Wonderful’ and the deliciously sexy ‘Je M’Oublie’, which oozes French sophistication with its atmospheric accordion backing and Hart’s voluptuous vocals.

Where the album falls flat is in trying to demonstrate the breadth of Hart’s skills; this leads to the inclusion of some forgettable guitar-pop tracks such as ‘Some Day’, a bland ballad that simply does not do Hart’s unique voice justice. Fortunately, Hart is an accomplished jazz singer, and her wit, flair and talent pull her through the dross. Sassy, classy and unashamedly mushy, Whatever Happened To Love? marks the debut of a new and formidable force in modern jazz. Let’s hope that Hart doesn’t lose sight of what she’s best at.

Andy Wasley

http://wearsthetrousers.wordpress.com/2008/06/06/2007-reviews-dump-h/

On behalf of MHI and our clients I would like to say how fantastic Victoria and the band's performance was at the Newark Jazz Festival. Victoria captivated the audience from the start and we all felt like she was giving us a personal performance in our own front room. The way she chatted along as if she knew us all just added to her fantastic voice and of course the music from the band. Please don’t change this format it was perfect

Thanks ever so much for the most incredible evening of Jazz.
Victoria Hart is the best live musician I have ever enjoyed, she swings, she sings, she stole my musical soul.

Newark Jazz Festival review

Talented singer Victoria Hart brought plenty of glamour to this year’s Newark Jazz Festival at the Baptist Church in Albert Street on Saturday night.

Despite just returning from the Cannes Film Festival and having trouble with her luggage – the airline damaged her suitcase – she looked elegant and refined during the sold-out concert.

The blonde bombshell wore a white dress with black polka dots – looking very much like Marilyn Monroe – but finished it off by wearing brown cowboy boots for the first half.

In the second half she wore a long flowing orange evening gown but no shoes as she had not packed any, which she put down to a wardrobe malfunction.

Victoria, backed by five talented male musicians, started the set with “Too Darn Hot” and certainly oozed sex appeal. Throughout the evening she swayed her body and teased the audience with such numbers as “Sunny Afternoon”, “Cheek To Cheek”, “Cry Me A River”, “Love Bites”, “Smooth Talker” and “Black Coffee”.

The second half began with an acoustic set before belting out such tunes as “Two Time Blues”, “People Get Ready”, “Good Girl Gone Bad” and “Be Like That”.

She smouldered during “My Heart Belongs To Daddy”, “Lullaby Of Broadway” and “Chocolates and Strawberries” before finishing with her jazzed up version of “Addicted To Love”.

The crowd went wild and there were plenty of shouts for more.

This bubbly and giggling girl has a real future ahead of her, having already performed for the likes of George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

It’s about time the UK produced artists of her calibre and I could listen to her over and over again. Come back soon Victoria.

Newark Advertiser May 23rd 2008

Duet with Christie Hennessy on his new No.1 album Two of Us

Christie asked Victoria to sing a duet with him for the album. They were an unlikely pairing but he suggested Mr Blue because he felt the jazzy feel of the song would suit Victoria Sadly Christie died in December not long after he had finished recording the album. As Victoria says “In the short time I knew Christie I found him to be not just a highly talented singer songwriter but also a lovely man.
